Diaper rash is a very common condition for babies who are left in soiled diapers for too long. It is also caused by friction from the diaper; some brands of detergents or baby wipes, or from the plastic from disposable diapers that do not let air circulate properly. The result is skin that has become sore, red, scaly, and tender. Persistent diaper rash (say lasting for more than a few days) may mean the presence of a fungus called Candida albicans which is recognised by a rash which is usually red, slightly raised, and has small red dots extending beyond the main part of the rash. This is often caused when a breastfeeding mother is taking antibiotics.
Preventing Diaper Rash
Keep your baby's skin as dry and clean as possible and change diapers often so that feces and urine won't initiate the rash and exacerbate the condition. Also, rinse the baby's bottom between changes, and dry the skin properly (pat gently, don't rub dry) before you put on a new diaper. Cloth diapers should be rinsed several times after washing to remove any traces of soap or detergent that can irritate your baby's skin.
